By Jenna J – The talk of boxing right now is centered around one man, a fighter that is not afraid to offend anyone that he feels offended him. That fighter is Floyd Mayweather Jr. and he is coming off a controversial fourth round win over former WBC Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz in a fight that has upset a lot of fans and followers of the sport. The controversy centers around not whether a punch was illegal, but really questions if that legal shot was sportsmanlike from arguably the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the game. In the fourth round of what was shaping up to be another one-sided boxing exhibition for Mayweather, the action shifted a little bit and Victor Ortiz mounted an offensive outburst that had Mayweather retreating to the ropes and on the defensive, when out of nowhere an illegal and intentional headbutt came in from Ortiz which left Mayweather cut on both the inside and outside of his lip, and Victor Ortiz on the receiving end of a point deduction for the foul. As things turned out, this would be the beginning of the end for Ortiz. When Joe Cortez called time in, Ortiz still feeling apologetic came in looking for acknowledgement from Mayweather, received a small gesture from the former champion, followed by a quick left hand, and shortly thereafter by a powerful right. Victor Ortiz crumbled to the canvas, and was unable to beat the count issued by the referee, losing his WBC championship in only his first defense.
The aftermath of the fight has brought plenty of discussion from fans and critics alike, and it also became the focal point of my recent post fight radio show. My views on the fight have not changed, and I still believe that Mayweather did not do anything wrong. He did what a fighter should do, and that is if your opponent shows you weakness that you should punish him for his mistakes. But after the events of this past Saturday night, the biggest question still remains, and that is whether or not this fight has brought us one step closer to the matchup we as fans have long wanted to see, Floyd Mayweather
Jr. vs Manny Pacquiao. It is without a doubt the biggest fight that can be made in the history of boxing, and a match that can bring life back to what has been a struggling sport. To date, the fight has not taken place with the reason being more in relation to the fighters’ camps, then the politics of boxing. There have been two occasions that a fight between the biggest stars of the game have been in serious discussion, with each man being to blame for the match not happening till this point. Manny Pacquaio seemingly cost the first negotiation with his feelings on Olympic style drug testing, when almost everything else had been agreed upon. In the second attempt it was Mayweather Jr.’s outrageous demands preventing the bout taking place by the end of 2011.
At this point Manny Pacquaio still has some business at hand, as he is scheduled to return November 12th for his third match with rival Jaun Manuel Marquez. Few expect Pacquiao to have the same problems with Marquez that he had in their first two encounters, and many are predicting that the size difference is going to much for Marquez to overcome . Assuming that Pacquaio comes away with a victory, his options afterwards are quite limited. The only potential opponent that can be marketed besides Mayweather Jr is the soon to be Top Rank signed Timothy Bradley, who was regarded as the best 140lb fighter in the world before his recent promotional problems prevented a unification match with Amir Khan. While he is a legitimate opponent, he is not one that boxing fans desire to see in there with Filipino star. Mayweather Jr.’s options are just as limited, with only Amir Khan sitting as a fight that could be sold to the public. Many observers wonder if Khan would be even ready to take that matchup, and its marketability in the United States does not have the same value as it does overseas. Both Mayweather and Pacquaio have built a potential super fight to its absolute peak of interest, and both men don’t have too many roads left that don’t involve each other.
With the new year vast approaching one wonders if we will ever see this fight, but I myself having been around boxing the way that I have, know that the biggest fights don’t always get made, but when there is this much money on the table for one bout, it doesn’t matter how many obstacles have stood in its way, it will eventually happen. I think that this time around superstitions and egos will take a backseat to common sense, because with each passing fight, Mayweather and Pacquiao leave a little of themselves behind and it’s something they can never get back. Both men know that time escapes no one and with Pacquiao turning 33 soon, and Mayweather advancing to 35 next year, they don’t have much time left to face each other while still at their best. I believe the next fight for both men is a fight with each other, and in May 2012 I think we will finally get the bout the world REALLY awaits.

if mayweather is a true champion he should earn the respect he think he deserves by beating an opponent thru great boxing and not with the one he showed fans recently.filipino fans have pacquiao as the greatest but if he beat pacquiao fair and square he’ll have our admiration.pacquiao has no more issues to blood testing.the ball is in his hands.he should do his part and give the fans what they like.the best man will win!
It will never happen as Mayweather will insist into what he call “LEVEL PLAYING FIELD” before accepting the fight with Manny….that is the random drug testing as his excuse…He’s talking of level playing field….does he understand what is all about…by knocking on the unguarded Ortiz? Come to think of it folks.
Agree!!! where’s the “level playing field” when you’re knocking an opponent who is not defending himself. Silly Mayweather.
Floyd has already my admiration when it comes to his ring smarts and skills, but he has my hatred for his personality. The way he fought with Ortiz, I think Pacquiao will win. If Pacquiao backs him up the corner like Ortiz did, he’ll be in trouble.
Quit blaming the downfall of the first and all negotiations to Pacquiao. There is nobody else to blame but your boy, Floyd Mayweather. He threw that OSDT in there because he knew Pacquiao would not accept such rediculous, unheard of, stupid demand stemming from fear of getting KTFO. He knew Pacquiao was and always be a threat. If he really believe and has all the supporting facts that Pacquiao is taking illegal drugs then SHOW UP AND IN COURT AND SUBMIT HIS DEPOSITION!!! I just can’t believe how many people are buying his stupid alibis..tsk..tsk..tsk. Understand this, your boy is scared, he will never fight Pacquiao. His uncle/trainer already said he is not fighting Pacquiao next! It will never happen. Your boy is greedy…..why risk fighting Pacquiao, if he can have safer opponent and still make more. For him, it doesn’t make sense from a business standpoint. Now that Pacquiao and Top Rank are willing to undergo his stupid OSDT, he is saying that he’s got some issues with the purse split. What a retard!!! Nuff said…..
the funny thing about that accusation was that when examined in a proper venue (courtroom) pbf didnt bother to act as confident as he does facing the camera and spitting venom against the PACMAN. I believe this man (PACMAN) bothers floyds confidence of winning if ever they fight. the courtroom is on-going but it wont take long for the decision to be reached esp if the respondent doesn’t bother to show up.
Floyd Mayweather is a SICK man!!! on his zero loss no matter what people think he will remain coward to avoid a 1 defeat. He knows that fighting Manny Pacquiao his end is near. So why he should fight Manny? That is a simple reason of a COWARD GAY!!! BIG MOUTH GAY!!! THE CHEATER Unsportsman. He will die with his zero loss even the whole world will against him. That is why he is very sick. BUt time will come all of what he does will never be remembered especially those bad things he did. No matter of ZERO loss the whole world doesn’t count on it.
i have quick question
If floyd mayweather is concern about the sport that he love
then why he didnt insist yhe olympic style drug testing
when he fought his previous opponents?
eventhough we all know that even before roids its alreafy been there
when he said he dominated the sports for almost 16 years
why today when pacquiao beat ricky hatton in 2 rounds and rose up from being a superstar?
can someone explain to me theyre answer
There’s no more excuse right now for Floyd to take the deposition. I can’t wait to see him and prove his lie in the court room.
It Should Not Happen! Floyd is a criminal cheater inside & outside the ring!
THE FIGHT WILL NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE MAYWEATHER DON’T WANT IT AND AFRAID TO HAVE A LOSS IN HIS BOXING RECORD. HE IMAGINES HIMSELF TO BE A SUPERMAN AND ABOVE ALL CREATURES INCLUDING GOD. HE HAS NO ATTRIBUTE OF HUMILITY BUT RATHER ARROGANCE. HIS HEAD SWELLS LIKE A VERY HUGE BALLOON, AND IT WILL ONLY BE HIS FOOLISHNESS THAT WILL DESTROY/PUNISH HIM. IF HE IS A TRUE GREAT BOXER WHY WOULD HE BE BRAGGING INSTEAD OF FIGHTING PACQUIAO. HE IS A VERY BAD PERSONALITY OF THE SPORT OF BOXING TO BE DISBANDED FROM THE CULTURAL TEACHINGS ON OUR YOUTHS AND TO THE WHOLE WORLD . HIS BEHAVIOR EMULATES OF BRUTE AND SAVAGE CULTURE THAT EXISTS MILLION YEARS AGO.
There is reason to question whether Mayweather actually wants to fight Pacquiao. And you can hardly blame him.
Here is what happened to some of Pacquiao’s last seven opponents:
Antonio Margarito, pummeled repeatedly, broken orbital bone, sent to hospital. Miguel Cotto, pummeled repeatedly, TKO, sent to hospital. Ricky Hatton, knocked out cold, sent to hospital, hasn’t fought since. Oscar De La Hoya, pummeled repeatedly, TKO’d, hasn’t fought since. David Diaz, pummeled repeatedly, TKO’d, sent to hospital.
The other two (Joshua Clottey, Shane Mosley) essentially refused to fight, covered up for 12 rounds and accepted lopsided losses by decision.
Pacquiao doesn’t just defeat opponents; he punishes them right into an ambulance. Mayweather, attempting to spin the argument, notes that he beat most of those guys before Pacquiao and claims he “softened them up.”
Perhaps. It’s also possible Mayweather sees the destruction Pacquiao can do to a man’s health, reputation and career, and wouldn’t mind avoiding him completely.
Only Floyd knows for sure. Mayweather and Pacquiao fight will never happen.
Okay.
So here’s the deal. Floyd Mayweather’s career at this juncture isn’t about a huge payday, legitmizing his legacy, satiating boxing fans, nor satisfying a need to want to challenge himself by competing with the best fighter out there out there. No.
Floyd Mayweather’s career motivation is only about keeping that all-important, Big-0, that spotless record, to preserve an illusion that his distorted, inflated ego depends on for it’s very survival. That Big-0 is the be all, end all for Floyd Mayweather.
Luckily for Floyd, he has the best of all possible worlds to ensure that record is never in danger.
He is a truly remarkable, savvy boxing scout, shrewd businessmen, and great promoter (Whom else would have the shrewd insight to know that if your opponent has a superstision of needles on fight day to demand Olympic style drug testing?). Floyd has an uncanny knack for sizing up which opponent would fare the worst against his style. He also has an uncanny knack for evaluating which opponent has unduly captured the public’s attention and praise – in other words, the overhyped fighter that would generate the most pay-per-view interest.
But unluckily for us fans, this micro-managed system of opponent selection always results in dubious, un-noteworthy bouts that leave us scratching our heads, with only one word coming to mind each time: Sham.
This offensive, confrontational and disrespectful Bad-Boy of Boxing has let us down each and every time. Because he talked us into hating him, touted his skills til he was blue in the face and then refuses to engage each successive, publicly-derided, villified opponent he faces.
Why do these fights stink so damn badly? Simple.Because long before the opening bell,Team Mayweather cleverly and carfully manipulate and orchestrate all the variables. Nothing left to chance. Like the fact that almost every fight of his career was made to take place in Floyd’s back yard.
Because a fight in vegas guarentees him all the stipulations…like local promoters, like the oversized, immense ring he demands every time out so that he may make the most of his evasive, backwards movement that he’ll be utilizing all night long.
And another Uniqely-Vegas accomodation, those hand injections that Floyd gets that keep him from feeling pain in his particularly brittle hands until after the match is over. No, only the opponent gets to feel that pain, because that would not be fair to Floyd.
Another uniquely-Mayweather nit-picking stipulation states his opponent has to give blood on fight day.
I imagine a manager of any potentioal mahyweather opponent, upon viewing the contract the fist time, is stunned by the number of asterisks. Because Floyd Knows. And more importantly, Floyd knows…better. He knows better than to face the best when they’re at their best. He knows there have been guys in his division(s) who stood a legitimate chance of beating him. Floyd knows…boxing politics. A lot more than you or I ever will. And he’s craftily, shrewdly and deceptively kept himself out of true harm’s way.
So only the luckiest chosen few get to be a Mayweather opponent long after a long series of stipulations and variables are scrutinized, orchestrated and mapped out by Team Mayweather. Only then will Floyd proceed to climb between the ropes and do a twelve-round, safety-first, tactical retreat-to-a-points-victory. Here we have a champion who’s a safety-at-all-cost tactition who specializes in the “fuck the fans” style of securing victory – the perpetual stinking the opponent out …ever the grand master of stinking a guy out.
And after seeing all Floyd’s fights, studying his style and opponent selection, I’ve come up with a name that suits him greatly: Floyd Mayweather, the “Champion Cherrypicker”.
If the top cherrypicker in the sport could be awarded a championship, Floyd would have it. Or is it that he is always champion by way of his cherrypicking? Both merits would earn him that nickname. Because his career and his legacy are a sham. His personal life, a disgrace. And within his classless world view, he lines himself up with the only fan base he can manage: other angry and oppressed black men like himself.
Floyd’s self-promotion serves as a rallying cry to that demographic. But unlike other black superstar athletes like Michael Jordan, who relate to their fan base with class, character, and the spirit of achievement, Floyd rallies his with nothing but negativity and unrest, that ultimately worsens race-relations in America.
His career and personal life, both shams. So we as fight fans get a continual dose of this savvy self-promoter that dupes us time and time again as he talks up yet another matchup, legitimizing it enough to snare our pay-per-view dollars and laughing all the way to the bank. No wonder Larry Merchant went off on him.
In all the boxing and mma matches I’ve ever seen, never have I seen a victory as classless as Floyd’s over Victor Ortiz. I never imagined a superstar athlete could reach to such disgraceful depths. Imagine my surprise.
I will end this with a word of advise to Manny Pacquiao.
Manny, they’re doing wonderful things with modern psychology. People in droves are conquering and overcoming every phobia you could think of. Get a hypnotist or someone to get you past that stupid needle phobia that stands between you and a hundred million dollars. Might be something to think about.
the best way to knock floyd out of his chair is not buy his fights.
i didnt, so no fuss. i knew its not worth the penny.
one crazy thing about so many boxing fanatics is they buy the character floyd is projecting! arguably they love the villain type mouth trashing malicious egocentric floyd jr, they lick on his feet encouraging him to do more! no wonder bunch of articles, interviews, sites and promotions still lingers around floyd jr, because like him they love money, fame and attention. these suckers love to suck the blood out of the event its propelling, and ignoring the more noble and uplifting part of SPORTS. they prefer it called pure entertainment. a lousy job for a lousy money. the victim? you.
btw dellgriff80,
pacquiao aint afraid of needles. its the GBP and mayweather clan that imputed the line “pacquiao is afraid of needles”. pacman got tattoos in his body, arm. it was just recent announced that pacquiao is taking any blood test all the way. after that in another floyd interview floyd defiantly denied he said pacquiao is next. “dont put words to my mouth”. learn the ways of floyd jr, he’s one pathetic liar, and everyone that follows and believe in him is a fool.
Dellgriff80
I only hope you are a writer for a living because that was a fantasic breakdown of mayweather. Best I have ever read. If you are not, you should be.
Maybe the thing to do is fire up a anti Floyd website and see how many people we can get on the train. Im a hardcore boxing fan. I buy all the PPV fights, but I’m tired of mayweather. If we can get enough people to stop buying his fights, he may actually fight a real fighter. I know one thing, I won’t buy another one of his fights, not after the Ortiz fight. I don’t even want to see it the week after.
Oh, and you forgot about one of Pacquiaos recent opponents: after the first Morales fight, Morales was obviously damaged by it because he lost four in a row afterwards. Even the winner of a Pacquiao bout is damaged.
Floyd o’boy! The man clamoring for an even playing field… The man worried about someone getting seriously hurt if the playing field is not even… The man who desperate to clean the sport of boxing… Then why did you hit a man who is not yet ready to fight? Yes, I agree you hit him clean, but do you really call it even hitting someone with his hands down and while the ref is looking elsewhere? Did you forget that he could have ended up in coma because you hit without knowing that you will hit him? Man 0 man, you really belong to Mayweather family!
Mayweather putting all these crap ’cause he’s afraid he’s won’t be able to sell himself anymore if he loses that zero. Nobody’s going to listen to his sh*t anymore. What he doesn’t realize is that people will remember him (if ever) not for that zero, but for the bad taste he leaves on everybody’s mouth everytime he pulls off cheap stunts like this, as bad as the stench coming out of his mouth.
Dream fight between Congressman Pacman and Fmjris is just a dream turned into a nightmare! So just move on! Arrogant duck is dead scared of the great PACMAN, period.
if mayweather believes that he is the #1 p4p fighter or best fighter in the world.. he should fight the other #1 p4p fighter or best fighter in the world right now which is manny pacquiao and if he defeats manny pacquiao then thats the time he can shout everywhere he wants that he is the #1 p4p fighter in the world or best fighter in the world and a true champion in the world from past, present and future..
We are not among them who believe Floyd would kick the ass of Pacman, Nor Pacman would defeat Floyd and send him to hospital, All of these could only be proven if ever they meet inside the ring ,the ring would authenticate who’s who, and what is what to be the real best.Hope they face each other not after they’re both “OBSOLETE”.These fight needs no hype to gain world wide marketability for it is ripe and ready for harvest. We hope both camps stops all these bull shitting and face each and be act as like real sportsmen as what they were supposedly are. Thanks for publishing ..and more power.
hey! guys.. this is what happend last saturday mayweaher vs ortiz, scripted you know that why? beacuse ortiz bought by floyd to retain his title ZERO LOSS..lol. that all
That fight never be happen. Never and ever LoL
Jenna, wished the fight between floyd and manny pushes through, like the millions of boxing fans, however it’s really sad that the fight will never happen simply because floyd does’nt want to fight. He may or maybe not be scared with manny. The reason(s) only his feeble mind knows. So let it go, yeah it is really frustrating for us fans and FLOYD DO NOT
EVEN CARE WHICH IS WHY IT’S MADDENING.
dude, dont get too emotional on floyd. he barely makes a gentleman gesture on ortiz how much more on you?
i never looked up to him, even in his skills, its superficial. you enjoy him, he excels in beating easy cherry picked opponents, but suck him into fighting big guys like dela hoya, he barely wins! or maybe margarito, martinez, cotto, clottey alike you will see his flaws and weakness. all floyds welterweight fights, without cheating floyd only won a TKO once. he is dead scared of the rest of this big guys out there. ortiz, he knew he can manipulate, with inexperience and lousy defense can beat him easy. yet cheaply he makes a sucker punch after a brief apologetic hug? wow, such a cowardly act. no, i dont expect anything from floyd mayweather jr at all.
Floyd ain’t gonna fight pacman, next year or maybe ever. You and i know he’s scared sh!t of the “little man”. FYI: floyd’s gonna join Team USA in the comin London Olympics. He’s gonna compete in the mens 100 meter dash against Usain Bolt for the fastest runner on the planet.
Go figure.
Chicken Floyd will never fight the Pacman. He is just too scared based on his words and actions. Being too disrespectful of an 80 year old media man, I hope he gets what he deserves when he faces someone his age in a street fight. His class definitely is a ghetto level. A disgrace in our sports.
If FMJ is the best boxer as he claims he is, he should not be afraid to face anybody at his weight class. But, he had done it before, he will do it again. It’s not just MP, but, Cotto, Margarito and even Mosley during his prime. If FMJ will challenge boxers who are 10-20 lbs heavier than him, like MP did, I will salute him. If he let his mouth do the taking, he will only believe in himself. What is there to boast of your zero loses if you are afraid to fight the man who dethrones you in the P4P ranking?
The fight will never happen.. but floyd not fighting pac will haunt him for the rest of his life..
wow, genna, you’re a cheap guy! THIS IS SPORTS we’re talking about not a barbaric gladiator fight inside an arena. sportsmen shows each opponent respect and gratitude. what ortiz did was wrong, i mean wrong and he acknowledge that obviously pretty much. in return you should do the same by giving him the chance to compose himself and return to the fight. gentlemen gesture which every sports person should and always portray inside and outside the ring. you cant impose disgusting ways and foul behavior and say its ok, its part of SPORTS. damn, what kind of example do you want to impute here genna, that others should do what floyd did? and you look away and say let floyd and pacquiao fight? damn, you’re a really cheap writer genna.
pacquiao opens a new door for negotiations when he said he is now willing to go through any blood test. but to be very clear with all your delusions expectations from your crystal ball, genna, floyd have also defiantly denounced in saying pacquiao’s next… what world are you from? dont you know how to read between lines? this year pacquiao was looking for his next fight floyd kept hiding under semi retirement, and right after pacquiao declares marquez his opponent floyd suddenly pops out and pronounced ortiz his. THIS IS AN UPRIGHT DUCKING! OBVIOUSLY. now you think floyd will step up next year? damn, you’re making a fool of yourself genna. better look for another job, or hobby. you suck in sports.
Madam Jenna you are not getting your facts straight! The fight will never happen!! Read other articles or news letters, the opinions of sports writers are very clear, there is no chances for the fight to happen!! Unless, Manny submit to all of the demands of floyd, including jumping over the Golden Gate Bridge! floyd is insane!! FORGET ABOUT THE FIGHT!! Except of course, Manny needs huge payday, he will be tempted to fight despite the absurdity of floyd’s demands! or Manny is “kapit sa patalim”!
.) During Floyd-Ortiz Initial Promo press conference => Pacquiao, Yes you’re Next
2.) During Floyd-Ortiz Final Promo press conference => I never said that, I never said that at all..
3.) During Floyd-Ortiz post fight press conference => I dont need Pacquiao
pacquaio is far, more, waaaaaaay better than mayweather when it comes to boxing scoring points, knock out opponents, sportmanship and a most of all a better person!
All u sound so stupid… it is all pacmans fault for the first downfall of negotiations … hating on may ortiz deserved its fools a disgrace to my race no true mexican fighter wuld act that way… and pacman is guna relize jus like everyone else damn its alot different wen u get in the ring with mayweather…. look at pure stats, I’ve never seen anything like mayweather on paper.. nd why doesn’t pacman want to take the tests? Is he hiding sumthin, I’ve never heard of a fighter whose hands grow 2 INCHES! From when they r 25picketing to 30 hahaha wtf… or a fighter whose calfs go from 11the inchs to 15the from 25 to 30the shit souunds llike sumthin is goin on…
I really don’t think it matters. Test or no test. Steroids or no steroids. PAC man probably can’t handle Mayweather. I give Floyd the edge. I think Timothy Bradley would give Floyd a he’ll of a fight. That’s the fight I want to see.
The fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather is not going to happen anytime soon. In fact boxing doesn’t want for it to happen yet beacause they know after the fight their is nothing left for boxing. These two fighters are at the point in their careers where they are ready to hang up the gloves. By the time they fight eachother you can best believe whoever wins is going to retire as one of the best this sport has ever seen, and I highly doubt whoever that person is will give the other fighter a chance to take that glory away. I just hope that when this fight does happen its not rigged as was the fight between Mayweather and Ortiz. I can’t believe that Ortiz sold out for 2 mil plus the 3 that Mayweather gave him. Its crap like this that has so many fans turning to the UFC. Fans are sick and tired of boxing being all about the fame and money and not the fight.
